life and work

Sonajharia Minz received her PhD in Computer Science from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. She had previously completed a master's degree in the same subject there, and in mathematics she obtained a master's degree from Madras Christian College in Chennai. Her specialty areas are geospatial , spatio-temporal data analysis , data mining , machine learning and rough sets . She began teaching in 1990 as an assistant professor of computer science at Barkatullah University in Bhopal. In 1991 she moved to Madurai Kamraj University in the same role before moving to Jawaharlal Nehru University in 1992, still as an assistant professor. There she was appointed Associate Professor in 1997 and Full Professor in 2005. In 2020 she was appointed Vice Chancellor of Sido Kanhu Murmu University in Dumka. This makes her one of the few Adivasi women who hold a managerial position at a university. Minz also heads the Association of Lecturers at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNUTA).

In the course of her life, Sonajharia Minz claims to have experienced multiple discrimination as a member of the Oraon ethnic group . This prevented her from going to the school of her choice, and a math teacher advised her not to study that subject even though she got the best marks in three consecutive exams. In January 2020, Minz was injured in the leg by stone throwing during the right-wing riots at Jawaharlal Nehru University.

In addition to teaching, Sonajharia Minz is socially and politically committed. She spoke out clearly against the Citizenship Amendment Act , the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR). In 2020, she supported an initiative to return 141 women workers in the textile industry to their home villages in Jharkhand during the Covid-19 travel restrictions in India .
