Sonea: The Guardian (English original title: The Ambassador's Mission ) is a fantasy novel by Trudi Canavan . It belongs to Canavan's trilogy about the fantasy world of Kyralia and is a sequel to the trilogy The Guild of Black Mages .

action

Twenty years after the Ichani invasion of Kyralia, things have changed in the guild. Magicians from lower strata of Kyralian society can now be accepted into the guild, and Sonea has managed to ensure that the hospitals she opened in the former hut districts are universally recognized. The annual cleanup, which took place in Imardin in winter, has been discontinued. However, new problems have also arisen, such as a constant power struggle between the members of the guild who come from the House and those who have a lower social background. The old alliance between the thieves has also broken apart since it was no longer held together by the purge.

Sonea's son Lord Lorkin wants to accompany Lord Dannyl as an assistant to Sachaka, where he will take up his new position as ambassador. Sonea fears that Lorkin may be in great danger there, as the Ichani families who died in the Kyralia incursion might seek revenge on him. She also fears that some of the Sachakans may be offended by the fact that Lorkin is the son of the black magician Akkarin, who himself killed many Sachakan black magicians during the invasion. She tries to prevent Lorkin from being sent by the guild, but fails because the previous ambassador sees no particular danger for Lorkin.

It is also not an easy decision for Dannyl to go to Sachaka, as it means a separation from his partner Tayend for him. The latter cannot accompany him to Sachaka, since he does not know magic and is therefore regarded by the Sachakans as not much more than a slave.

In Sachaka, Dannyl looks for historical clues to the formation of the Sachakan Wasteland, while Lorkin is more interested in finding an alternative to black magic. When Lorkin actually disappears, Ambassador Dannyl tries to find him with the help of the Sachakan King's advisor, Ashaki Achati. He finds out that there is another powerful group of black magicians in Sachaka, "The Traitors", who live in a secret hiding place in the mountains and from there can have considerable influence on the political events of Sachaka. However, they do not agree on Lorkin. Some of them want to see him dead in order to take revenge on a broken promise his father made, others try to save him.

Meanwhile, a murderer has been up to mischief in Imardin for several years, who is called by many "the hunter of thieves", since only thieves are among his victims. When Cery's family is also murdered, he begins to research. When he finds out that a wild magician is roaming the poorer districts - and thus in the territory of thieves - he decides to work with Skellin, a young foreign thief. This demands of Cery to provide him with clues to the hunter of the thieves and through combined research Skellin can soon find the wild magician and set a trap for her. Cery asks Sonea to help them locate the magician, and she receives unexpected help from Lord Regin. Sonea finally manages to catch two wild magicians and bring them to the guild.

In Sachaka, Ambassador Dannyl and Ashaki Achati continue to pursue Lorkin. Since Lorkin has chosen to work with "the traitors," he arranges a meeting with Ambassador Dannyl with the help of the group to explain this to him. He also explains it to his mother Sonea with the help of a blood ring that she had secretly slipped into him. After meeting Dannyl, Lorkin gives him the blood ring so that the "traitors" won't take it away from him.

Lorkin is active as a healer with the "traitors" and hopes to keep the promise of the former High Lord Akkarin.

In the meantime, the two wild mages in the guild are interrogated by reading their minds and it turns out that only one of the two is actually a wild mage and that the other girl was supposed to be just a diversionary. Behind the act is Skellin, whose mother is the wild magician, who is now in the hands of the guild. Researching their minds reveals that Skellin and his mother come from a land where magic people are persecuted. They settled in Kyralia, where Skellin used his mother's powers to gradually eliminate his rivals among the thieves. The guild also learns that Skellin himself is a mage who has previously kept his powers hidden. The guild as well as Cery are now doing everything possible to track down Skellin, the wild magician.
