from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sun trip ( isl. Solfar , Engl. The Sun Voyager ) is a sculpture in Reykjavik , Iceland , which the artist Jón Gunnar Árnason was created (1931-1989) in 1986.

To mark the 200th anniversary of the city of Reykjavík, there was a competition in 1986. Sólfar was selected and the original (aluminum sculpture , 42.5 × 88 × 36 cm.) Was given to the city of Reykjavík. The full-size sculpture was built in its current location and unveiled on August 18, 1990 to mark the anniversary of the city of Reykjavík.

The sculpture is located on the northern coast road Sæbraut. It was originally supposed to show at sunset, which explains the name. After several changes to the plan, it was installed facing north at its final location with the artist's consent. Made of stainless steel , it resembles a Viking ship and is one of the most photographed works of art in Reykjavík. Different light and weather conditions ensure variety. At sunrise and sunset the metal seems to glow.

The Viking Ingolfur Arnarson is said to have established his court here as the first permanent settler.
