Sony RX-100 is a compact camera series from the Japanese manufacturer Sony. To date, seven models have been developed, each with the suffix "Mark I" to "Mark VII" (as of 2020).

lens

All RX-100 cameras have built-in lenses from the manufacturer Zeiss . The first models had a focal length of 28 to 100 mm (35 mm format) with a maximum aperture of F1.8 in the wide angle and F4.9 in the telephoto range.

A focal length of 24 to 70 mm was used for the RX100 III model. Here the aperture is F1.8 and F2.8 at 70 mm. From the RX100 VI, the models have a longer focal length, but are fainter: 24 to 200 mm focal length, but with an open aperture of F2.8 to F4.5.

Sensor & processor

Models II and III have an EXMOR-R CMOS sensor with 20.1 megapixels and background lighting (BSI, Back Side Illumination). The RX100 IV has the newer stacked EXMOR-RS-CMOS sensor with also 20.1 megapixels. On the RX100 V, VI and VII models, the sensor was equipped with 315 phase comparison autofocus points, which increased the speed of the autofocus. The RX100 series is the only compact camera series that has phase comparison AF technology. According to media reports, technology from the Sony Alpha 9 series is built into the Mark VII.

The cameras save photos in jpg format and in Sony's own raw data format ARW. From model IV, video recordings are possible in 4K . Model VII now records with full pixel readout, also has a microphone input and supports video recordings in portrait format. The latter is rated as a "concession to Instagramer" (chip).

Housing and display

The cameras do not have a viewfinder; the image is selected exclusively via the display. As of the RX100 II, the cameras have a folding display. This can be folded up by 84 degrees and down by almost 45 degrees.

The weight of the camera increased continuously with the higher model numbers: while the RX100 I still weighed 240 grams, the RX100 VII already weighs 302 grams.
