Sophiendukat (also: Kinderdukat, Dreifaltigkeitsdukat , more rarely: Sun ducat ) is the name of a gold coin that was first minted at Christmas 1616 at the instigation of the Saxon Electress Sophie , weighing around 3.4 grams.

history

The coins were dedicated to Sophie's children. They carried the intertwined monogram CS on the course swords on the front under the Kurhut. The monogram was interpreted in the older numismatic literature as " Elector Sophie ". Recent research and the Saxon Art Collections in Dresden now assume that the monogram stands for the electoral couple "Christian & Sophie". The inscription on the front reads "WOL THAT FREVD EXPERIENCE IN HIS CHILDREN". On the back there were the eye of God, the initials "IHS" (for Jesus Christ ) and a dove as symbols of the Trinity . The inscription on the back read "HILF DV HEILIGE DREYFALTIGkeit 1616". Because of this coinage, the Sophiendukats were also known as child or trinity ducats .

The coin was so popular as a sponsorship gift that it was minted in the Dresden Mint until 1873. The imprints can be distinguished from the original by the abbreviated inscription "WOL DEM DER FREVD IN SEIN KIND ERLEBT".
