Soran ( Kurdish سۆران) or Diana ( Arabic ديانا Diyānā ; Aramaic ܕܝܢܐ) is a university town and the administrative seat of the Soran district in the Kurdish governorate of Erbil in the autonomous region of Kurdistan . The city has about 125,000 inhabitants and is about 110 km northeast of Erbil .

The population consists mainly of Muslim and Christian Kurds and Chaldeans . The majority of residents are returning refugees, at the time of the Baath regime from Iraq fled.

Soran is located at the border triangle Iraq, Iran and Turkey near the Rawanduz valley.
