Osservatorio Astronomico Sormano

The Osservatorio Astronomico Sormano is an observatory in the Lombard foothills about 40 kilometers north of Milan near the village of Sormano in the province of Como . The observatory is registered under the IAU code 587 .

The observatory was privately financed by the Gruppo Astrofili Brianza and inaugurated in 1987. The first photographic observations took place in January 1989 and had the Apollo asteroid (4179) Toutatis as their subject. As a result, numerous other asteroids were discovered .

At the moment, the focus of observation is on tracking and calculating the orbit of objects close to the earth , using software developed in-house.

Instruments

The main instrument of the observatory is the Cavagna telescope named after Marco Cavagna , a Ritchey-Chrétien astrograph with a primary mirror diameter of 50 cm. There is also a telescope with a 15 cm aperture and a 17.2 cm Maksutov telescope .
