Soto-uke

The Soto-Uke (外 受 け) is a block technique in karate for the middle part of the body ( Chūdan ) with the forearm. “ Soto ” is Japanese for “outside” or “outside”, “ uke ” means “defense”.

The karateka makes a sideways backward movement from the outside in with the outside of the forearm. This is turned towards the center of the body and also turned in at the last moment. This impulse is intended to knock away the opposing attacking arm.
