Source Filmmaker (often abbreviated as SFM) is software from Valve Corporation , with which animations can be calculated in the in-house source engine . Source Filmmaker is free, but requires registration and installation of the Steam client . Source Filmmaker is currently (as of May 27, 2015) in the public beta phase.

history

Source Filmmaker was originally developed as Valve's in-house animation software. When the program leaked during the Team Fortress 2 beta release , a more or less stable version of the program was created by the community. On June 27, 2012, Valve launched the program's open beta.

Differences to other animation programs

Unlike most animation programs, SFM calculates animations using the source engine, which is used in Valve's games (including Half-Life 2 , Portal ). This significantly reduces the rendering time compared to 'classic' animation programs such as Maya , Blender or 3ds Max . In addition, models in the source engine's own .mdl format or materials (.vtf / vmt) can be used without any further conversion. This allows models / materials from Valve's games (or other games that use Source) to be integrated into SFM without any problems. By using the source engine, however, more complex effects (e.g. reflections) have to be avoided. In addition, unlike in the animation programs mentioned, no 3D models can be modeled in Source Filmmaker, since the Source Engine uses compiled models that must first be decompiled or (if the original files are available) recompiled for editing.

Steam workshop

Since April 1, 2013, the Steam Workshop has been integrated into Source Filmmaker, with maps (levels), particles (particle systems), scripts (Python scripts), materials, textures, sessions (saved projects), shots, animations created by the user , Sounds (audio files) and models (3D models). These can be searched for different games (Team Fortress 2, Half-Life, Portal, Alien Swarm etc.) and different categories (Character, Weapon, Clothing, Vehicle, Outdoor etc.).
