South Alberta Regiment

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The South Alberta Regiment (SAR) was a Canadian infantry regiment that served during World War II. The unit was set up in 1924 and mobilized in 1940 as part of the 4th Canadian Infantry Division. In February 1942 the division was reorganized into a tank unit and received tanks of the Ram type because there was a need for a second Canadian tank division.

The SAR came to France in mid-June, shortly after D-Day (June 6, 1944). Instead of the Ram tanks, they got Stuart and Sherman tanks .

They took part in the liberation of Holland and in the battle of the Scheldt estuary . In January 1945 they took part in the battle at Kapelsche Veer .

In the last weeks of the war they penetrated as far as northern Germany.

The name was transferred to the 'reserve reconnaissance regiment' "South Alberta Light Horse".
