The SC-1 was a sport aircraft produced by the Australian manufacturer Southern Cross Aviation .
History and construction
During the late 1950s and early 1960s several Australian companies attempted to start production for light aircraft. One of these companies was Southern Cross Aviation . The construction of the prototype of the SC-1 began in 1959. The first attempts at rolling were made in 1961. The unofficial first flight took place on March 1, 1961, the official one the day after. A total of 25 hours of flight tests were carried out. Due to the economic recession in the early 1960s and the strong competition from Cessna and Piper, the decision was made to discontinue development because it was not expected that a sufficient number of aircraft could be sold and offered at a sufficiently low price.
The SC-1 was a four-seat aircraft with a rear-opening cockpit canopy, an all-metal fuselage and wings. Only the bonnet and the wing tips were made of GRP . Designed as a low - wing aircraft, it had a retractable nose wheel landing gear and was powered by a 180 hp Lycoming O-360 AIA four-cylinder engine. The aircraft was approved for aerobatics .
