Soylent is a liquid food, similar to tube feeding or astronaut food . It is advertised as a staple food that, according to the manufacturer, completely covers the nutritional needs of an average adult.

history

Soylent goes back to the software developer Rob Rhinehart, who developed the product as a self-experiment. In February 2013, he published details of a month-long self- experiment How I Stopped Eating Food ("How I stopped eating food"). He also published the list of ingredients and nutrition tables. He made the recipe available under an open source license so that feedback from the community could be incorporated into the recipe.

Rhinehart founded the company Rosa Labs, which raised a capital of 3 million US dollars via the crowdfunding platform "Tilt" in order to manufacture Soylent commercially. This is the most successful crowdfunding project for a foodstuff. After the campaign, another 1.5 million were US dollars by venture capitalists lukriert to develop the product.

In April 2014, Rosa Labs began shipping $ 2.6 million worth of Soylent equipment with $ 500 worth of equipment.

Surname

The name goes back to a fictional food from the 1966 novel New York 1999 by Harry Harrison , which was made into a film in 1973 with the much better known movie classic ... year 2022 ... who want to survive . This is the combination of "Soy" (Engl. " Soja (Engl." ") With" Lentil " lens "), a series of mass industrial products for the diet of heavily overpopulated Earth, which allegedly obtained from various plant sources but were actually made from human flesh.

criticism

The long-term health effects of Soylent have not yet been adequately researched. Vitamin supplements in particular could have a negative impact on health. Some manufacturers therefore offer whole food alternatives, which, however, have also not been researched. Critics admit that short-term ingestion of Soylent or similar foods may be more beneficial than the traditional diet of many Americans. Many sources claim the opposite.

At Soylent, the social aspect of meals together is omitted due to the short preparation and consumption times. The variety of flavors is also lost if you only consume Soylent. Most consumers therefore use it as a convenience food and not as the sole food.
