The social history cigar factory museum of the Palatinate is located on Marienplatz in Rödersheim-Gronau in the Rhine-Palatinate district , directly at the intersection of the connecting lines between the Palatinate cities of Ludwigshafen am Rhein , Neustadt an der Weinstrasse and Bad Dürkheim, as well as at the interface between the vineyards on the German Weinstrasse and vegetable growing towards the Rhine. The museum is located on the upper floor of the former schoolhouse built in 1904. The museum depot in the basement of the local elementary school houses historical exhibits that are shown on special occasions or special exhibitions or are made available to other museums on permanent loan.

Socio-historical documentation

Around 35 information boards describe the change in the places Rödersheim and Alsheim-Gronau from farmers to industrial workers' villages in the period from the 19th and 20th centuries with historical pictures, graphics and texts . The focus is on the situation of workers - living and working conditions at work and in the private sector, conflicts in social networks, health issues, occupational safety, etc. The economic upswing in the business location "Palatinate Village" in the 19th century is explained using the flow of goods .

Museum manufacture

The manufacture with demonstrations of the artisanal cigar making is the core of the exhibition, in which all manufacturing steps of the cigar production in European technology from the year 1850 to around 1958 are shown. Using this technique (ripping - tearing - winding - rolling), cigars are produced during demonstrations in the museum or at external demonstrations ("Museum on Tour") - around 500 pieces per year.

Research workstation and library

The library and research workstation for students and authors on the topic are located in the exhibition room and on the ground floor of the building . The museum has a library of around 600 volumes in 2014 with publications on Palatinate history and the specialist collection of cigar production. The collection based on the private library of the local researcher Emil Hettich is continuously expanded through donations and purchases. A separate workstation for internal and external authors has been set up for research work and the creation of academic papers. In the local media archive of the museum, historical photos and films about Rödersheim-Gronau are archived in digital form. Most of them are available directly at the workplace in the museum. The entire inventory is outsourced due to continuous processing by the media conservator of the sponsoring association.

Archaeological Department

Archaeological finds from the Rödersheim-Gronau area are shown in two showcases. The main exhibit is the Rödersheim gold bracteate from the 7th century, found in a women's grave on the western edge of the district. The second focus is the representation of Gronau Castle, including a castle model.

Research work and publications

The employees of the museum association collect information and exhibits on the history of the Palatinate cigar factories. Research on social history is also organized. The results of the work are published in various media, for example in articles in the district yearbook of the Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis or in own publications.
