The Sociocultural Center is an event and cultural center opened in 2019 at the Westbahnhof in the western ring area in Braunschweig .

history

The socio-cultural center on the property at Westbahnhof 13 (formerly Broitzemer Straße 35) was built instead of an industrial building in which the Kurth Knoblau company was based. The inscriptions on the gable still bear witness to the Knoblau company. The warehouse once belonged to the Brachvogel timber dealer. In the 2000s and 2010s, the building abandoned by the company was used as a club called Fire-Abend , which was operated by the Fire-Abend eV association.

With the plan to create a replacement for the Meier Music Hall, which was demolished for an expansion of Volkswagen Financial Services at its location at Schmalbachstrasse 2, Westand GmbH acquired the property at Westbahnhof 13. The plans for a multifunctional hall were approved in January 2015 City presented.

Meanwhile, the association KufA (Culture for Everyone) planned to set up a cultural center on Kreuzstrasse called K67. The city of Braunschweig, which had been looking for a replacement for the FBZ for a long time, took part in this project. However, no cultural center could be built there, partly for reasons of noise pollution. After the failure of the K67, the Westand and KufA associations joined forces to plan a cultural center at the Westbahnhof location. Each of the clubs should use 50% of the building.

At first they expressed the will to keep the industrial building. A new roof was to be erected over the entire historical building using steel girders. Only the rear part of the hall, which had been missing a roof for a long time, should be demolished.

Finally, for cost reasons, it was decided to completely demolish the old industrial building and erect a new building at its location. Ultimately, however, at least one campaigned for the preservation of the stepped gable, for the preservation of which the city wants to raise funds.

Start of construction of the new building

From 2017 to 2018 the old industrial building was demolished and the historic gable front on the street side was secured. The work was delayed by contaminated sites in the ground. Construction work on the socio-cultural center will begin in March 2018. The completion of the new building was expected in 2019.

The sociocultural center is primarily intended to replace the leisure and education center at the Bürgerpark, which was closed in 2002 .

The KufA planned the operation of the following rooms:

  • Event hall for up to 300 people
  • gastronomy
  • Rooms of different sizes with a wide range of uses: group and seminar rooms, rooms for the presentation of young artists / musicians, for theater, dance, sport, etc., workshop and film / video room, two larger conference rooms, a photo acceptance point with a gallery in which Artists can be given a representative branch for the presentation of their works.

WESTand planned the operation of the following rooms:

  • Event hall for up to 800 people
  • approx. 15 rehearsal rooms for musicians
  • Operation of a recording studio.

opening

The construction was completed in 2019. The building has been in use since 23 August 2019. On September 20, 2019, the official opening of the Sociocultural Center took place in the presence of the Lord Mayor Ulrich Markurth. On September 21, 2019, the opening was celebrated with an open day for citizens.
