Sozium (Russian Саратовская региональная общественная организация “Социум” , English Socium ) is an association in Engels in Russia that is committed to helping people infected with HIV .

The organization supports infected people with all available options. It is particularly aimed at drug addicts, who are the largest group, and prostitutes. Deals:

  • Telephone advice
  • Medical and psychological help
  • Legal support
  • Seminars and trainings for those affected and helpers
  • research
  • Education to prevent HIV infection
  • Informing the public about the work and the dangers of the spread of AIDS
  • Distributing clean syringes to drug addicts
  • Offers for HIV tests

Sozium works with a small team of doctors, psychologists and social workers. Some of them are paid by the city. The organization receives financial and other support from local authorities, Russian non-governmental organizations, and foreign organizations such as the Global Fund .

history

The organization was founded in 1998. In 2002 it was officially registered in its current form.

On May 30, 2016, it was registered by the Russian Ministry of Justice as an " Organization in the Function of a Foreign Agent ". The chairman Ilja Steinberg stated that the organization could no longer work because it needed financial support from abroad. This was the reason for the registration. The local authorities would probably no longer cooperate with her either.
