The Latter Rain Mission is a Pentecostal Christian community . The origins are in South Africa and there are branches in Germany , the Netherlands and Hungary .
Surname
The name originated from biblical quotations from the book Joel ( Joel 2.23-29 LUT ) or Acts of the Apostles ( Acts 2.16-18 LUT ). There is an expectation that the spiritual gifts will be poured out like the latter rain (cf. Jak 5,7 LUT ).
history
The Latter Rain Mission was founded in South Africa in 1927 as Spade Reen Gemeentes van Suid Africa by Mara Fraser (1889–1972). The sanctification movement resulted in a great openness for charismatic movements in Germany. After the war, very different communities emerged within a short time. In Beihingen, for example, the charismatic Free Christian Community of Haiterbach-Beihingen and a building for the Latter Rain Mission were built around the same time . An A. Braun gave up his pig breeding and built the house of faith . Extensive and sometimes uncontrolled "blessings" were given and sometimes even "birds were preached". Other religious houses were built in Beilstein , Porta Westfalica and Thomasburg .
Church life
Religious houses serve as community rooms and community. Those who live here dedicate themselves full-time to the goals of the community. However, the parishioners come from a wider area. The Bible is understood as an inerrant authority on all questions of life and morals. The baptism of adults is practiced and ecstatic behavior and experience worlds are also practiced in a ritually ordered form in the services . Among other things, there is an extensive personal "quiet time" and the praise is accompanied by ritualized dance. This is therefore vaguely reminiscent of the Shaker religion . There is a dress code . The men wear brown suits, while the women appear in gray, blue, or white dresses and hats.
present
The religious houses should also serve the self-sufficiency of the congregations. The German Center is located in Beilstein , in Beihingen , today a district of Haiterbach , there is a retirement home. Since 2009 the community has been in a serious crisis. There were allegations of spiritual and sexual abuse, the mission lost numerous members, in some cases non-profit status, and came on the verge of bankruptcy. In 2015, the management made a public declaration of guilt. Official ecumenical relationships do not exist, but there are personal contacts between members of the fellowship and those of other churches.
