Space Situational Awareness

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The English term Space Situational Awareness - literally in German: space situation awareness - describes the knowledge of the current state of the near-earth space environment . These include, for example, findings on current space weather , existing objects in orbits and asteroids close to the earth .

For the production of Space Situational Awareness are space surveillance systems operated on the satellite based and / or ground-based observations. The most important of these systems is the US military-operated Space Surveillance Network , which observes objects in orbit around the earth. The US Air Force makes part of the data obtained available to everyone free of charge via its Internet service "Space-Track".

The European Space Agency (ESA) has been pursuing its own project, the SSA program, to improve space situational awareness in Europe since 2009 .
