Mandrel
A mandrel (also mandrel , arbor , the sleeve mandrel or segmented mandrel ) is a tensioning means, which rotary movements and torques to a clamped tool or work piece passes. The clamping, or more precisely the internal clamping, takes place in a bore or inside contour of the workpiece or tool and is used to transfer rotary movements or torques.
The mandrel is actuated by hand using a clamping nut or clamping screw (manually operated mandrel) or hydraulically or pneumatically via a clamping cylinder on the machine (power-operated mandrel).
The mandrel is typically attached to a machine spindle and centered using a cylindrical or conical mount.
Mandrels are used in manufacturing technology for machining (turning, milling, grinding, gear cutting) or when measuring workpieces for fixation.
