Voltage regulation

The voltage regulation in electrical power engineering is used to adapt the mains voltage to the current load situation in the power grid . Adjustment commands are given from the voltage regulator unit to the corresponding power transformers . The step switch for power transformers then switches a new turns ratio. This results in the resulting new line voltage.

The voltage regulation of the power transformers regulates the voltage in the simplest case for a single transformer. In more complex cases, several different transformers from different locations are connected in parallel. In such cases, the voltage regulation must keep the circulating reactive currents at an optimally low value in addition to the voltage.
