SpeechMagic

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

SpeechMagic is the brand name of a speech recognition technology from Nuance Communications, Inc. It is a software development kit (SDK) that enables information systems providers to integrate speech recognition . SpeechMagic is not sold as an independent solution or product, but only through integration into third-party systems. The technology was originally developed by Philips Speech Recognition Systems based in Vienna, Austria; the company was sold to Nuance in October 2008.

SpeechMagic is primarily used to collect information in healthcare. Doctors can use it to dictate content fields in a hospital information system or an electronic patient file and navigate them using voice commands. SpeechMagic is mainly used to create medical reports and doctor's letters.

SpeechMagic offers two options for converting speech into text: The front-end or online speech recognition shows - with a minimal delay - the recognized text directly on the author's screen. With back-end or batch speech recognition, the speech is converted into text in the background, which can then be called up at a later time by a typist or the author himself for correction.

SpeechMagic supports 25 recognition languages and offers more than 150 subject-specific recognition vocabularies. Special versions are available for the legal sector and for tax advice.

Philips Speech Recognition Systems, maker of SpeechMagic, was acquired by Nuance (maker of Dragon NaturallySpeaking ) on October 1, 2008 .
