The models are equipped with two-stroke engines in displacement sizes of 1.5 cm³, 2.5 cm³, 3.5 cm³, 5 cm³ and 10 cm³. The engines are operated with a mixture of 80% methanol and 20% castor oil .

In the 1950s, speed model car racing, which had become popular in the USA in the post-war period, reached Germany.

There are currently three official race tracks in German-speaking countries, in Unterreichenbach (Kapfenhardt), Langenhagen near Hanover and Witterswil (CH). In Germany, the German Model Motor Club (DMMC) is the leading umbrella organization. Other race tracks can be found in many European countries, the USA and Australia.

Today's speed models reach speeds of over 340 km / h, which makes them probably the fastest model cars.
