A plumber's screw , also known as a roofing screw , is a wood screw with a partially smooth shaft and pan head , onto which an embossed washer and a sealing washer are attached.

description

These screws are preferably used in metal and wood construction by plumbers , whereby the term "plumber", which is used synonymously for plumbers in parts of southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland, is used and thus a certain assignment to a professional group is established with this type of screw.

The washers are always delivered pre-assembled with the screw. The sealing washer, which has a diameter between 15 and 25 millimeters, fulfills various purposes. On the one hand, the metal washer ensures the force of the screw head is distributed over a larger area. On the other hand, the sealing washer, which is often made of neoprene , but can also be made of EPDM or rubber, prevents dust and liquids from entering the screwing point. Wood screws of stainless steel V2A are corrosion-resistant , weatherproof and by the sealing ring also waterproof. They are also available as copper screws for roof panels, for example, and in the V4A version , which are primarily used in yacht construction because of their salt water resistance . They are screwed directly through the component to be fastened into wood or masonry. Cross-slot designs , but also Torx and hexagon socket are available as drives .
