The Regensburg trolleybus was the trolleybus system of the Bavarian city of Regensburg , it always consisted of only one line and was operated by the Regensburg municipal utilities (SWR).
history
The Regensburg trolleybus was opened on March 18, 1953 to connect the Konradsiedlung on the outskirts of the city , the residential area that was built during the National Socialist era, had no connection to the local public transport network via Weichs with the city center. The final stop out of town was on the Danziger Freiheit square , where the roundabout there served as a turning loop . From there it went via Metzer Strasse, Straßburger Strasse, Brandlberger Strasse, Sudetendeutsche Strasse, Isarstrasse, Nordgaustrasse, Nibelungenbrücke , Weißenburgerstrasse, Greflingerstrasse, Stobäusplatz, Landshuter Strasse, Ernst-Reuter-Platz and Maximilianstrasse to Regensburg Central Station .
The journey time on the 5.07 kilometer long and consistently two-lane connection was 17 minutes, with the trolleybus running every ten minutes in winter, but only every 20 minutes during the rest of the time. The energy supply with 550 volts direct current was provided by OBAG , a total of 1,600 quintals of copper catenary wires and 161 spun concrete masts were installed. Before commissioning, the drivers were trained for 14 days at the Munich trolleybus , where they already had five years of experience with this means of transport. On the opening day, the Regensburg trolleybuses were allowed to travel free , but the large crowd meant that a four-year-old boy was run over by a car and had a fatal accident. In regular operation, a single trip over the entire route cost 20 pfennigs, which had to be paid to the seat conductor in the rear area.
The new means of transport complemented the Regensburg tram network , which opened in 1903 and included four lines 1, 2, 3 and 4 at the time . The trolleybus initially had no line name , only after tram line 3 was discontinued in 1955 it was assigned line number 3.
The vehicles were housed and serviced in the tram depot on Augustenstrasse, but the renewal of the rubber-mounted axles, which is due every two years, took place at the Munich municipal utility . Since there was no catenary connection to the depot and the trolleybuses had no auxiliary drive either , they had to be towed individually to and from the main station using a Magirus-Deutz truck. The trolleybuses also had to turn around early with outside help during the annual carnival parade in the city center, a tractor was stationed in Landshuter Strasse at the former tax office.
Ultimately, the trolleybus could not establish itself in Regensburg, especially since the parallel operation of three urban modes of transport - tram, trolleybus and omnibus - proved to be uneconomical in the long run. As early as June 1962, therefore, diesel articulated buses were predominantly used on Line 3 ; they were rented specifically in order to limit the costly trolleybus operation. Electric operation finally ended on May 17, 1963 after four more articulated diesel buses were purchased. In the following year, the transport company finally shut down the tram, so that today only buses run under the direction of the Regensburger Verkehrsbetriebe (RVB). The former trolleybus route is covered by lines 1 and 4.
In 2017, a few catenary masts in Maximilianstrasse at the departure point of line 12 at the main train station remind of the earlier trolleybus operation.
