Special carbohydrate diet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet ( SCD) is a diet proposed by Sidney Valentine Haas (1870-1964) and later made known by Elaine Gottschall, mother of one of Haas' patients. It is claimed that the diet can cure inflammatory bowel disease . However, this is not scientifically proven and the diet can pose a health risk due to malnutrition.

history

The SCD was developed by Sidney Valentine Haas (1870-1964) as a treatment for celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease as described in the English book The Management of Celiac Disease .

She later became known through the book Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet by biochemist Elaine Gottschall. The book introduces the diet and includes guides and recipes.

Details and effectiveness

The SCD limits the use of carbohydrates ( disaccharides (double sugars) and polysaccharides (multiple sugars)). Monosaccharides (simple sugars) are allowed and foods like fish, cheese, and honey are part of the SCD.

Prohibited, however, are u. a. Grains like wheat and rye, potatoes and lactose-containing dairy products.

The effectiveness is only substantiated by testimonials from patients.

The use of this diet has no proven benefit, but the imposition of excessive financial expense and potential malnutrition.

However, the latest findings show that there is a significant improvement in clinical and laboratory parameters in patients with mild or moderate symptoms of ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease under SCD. Nevertheless, there is still a need for research, especially with the inclusion of larger patient groups, with regard to the long-term effects with special consideration of the risk of nutrient deficits. In any case, therapy should not be carried out on your own, but should be supervised by a qualified doctor or nutritionist.

The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America states that there is no evidence that any particular diet or food is a cause, a way to prevent, or a way to cure inflammatory bowel disease. There are also only a few studies examining the relationship between SCD and Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis .
