The specific stiffness is a material property that plays a role as a selection criterion in lightweight construction . It indicates the resistance of a material with a given mass to deformation in the elastic range . In many cases, the greatest possible specific rigidity is desired. The specific stiffness can be calculated as

Stretch length

The expansion length indicates the original length at which a freely hanging body with a constant cross-section (e.g. a wire, a pipe or a cylinder) of a certain material expands to double under the influence of gravitational acceleration :
