Spitting Image is a video game released in 1989 featuring characters from the television show of the same name . It is a fighting game programmed by Walking Circles and published by Domark .
Gameplay
According to the game's history, a prophet predicted that in the next seven years a world war would break out, instigated by a "mysterious leader" so terrible that the Italians have already surrendered and so violent that even the Swiss will be involved. To avoid this fate, six world leaders have agreed to face the conflict directly - the winner will become the undisputed ruler of the world.
The player chooses one of the six rulers: Margaret Thatcher from the United Kingdom, Ronald Reagan from the United States of America, Mikhail Gorbachev from the USSR , John Paul II , Ayatollah Khomeini and PW Botha from South Africa . The game chooses a random opponent and the player's fighter travels to the opponent's country to determine the winner in 3 rounds. During a fight, Elizabeth II appears as a commentator and referee in a postage stamp.
The game was released for 8-bit game consoles, the battles are two-dimensional, the characters have only limited attack options that they can carry out. The characters can attack by jumping on the ground or in the air and have special abilities - Khomeini can inflict damage by using his beard as a third fist, while Thatcher can head buttocks. Each character can call a helper twice during a fight. This helper usually throws a type of projectile in close combat, which has a specific arc, but an experienced player can avoid the attack.
After all five opponents have been defeated, the player must fight against the "mysterious leader". Elisabeth announces that Prince Philips' last party mud catch gear is still available, and the fight takes place in the dark when someone turns off the lights. Mud occasionally stains the screen, and the only clue to the whereabouts of the player and his opponent is their eyes.
If the player manages to beat the "mysterious leader", he learns that all of this was a trick for John Rambo to take on the world and the game to end.
There is also a two-player mode available, where opponents can fight in any of the game's six locations. (Non-story mode)
Critical response
Spitting Image received poor reviews but was praised for its excellent rendering of the Spitting Image theme song.
