Spitsbergen marathon

The Spitsbergen Marathon is the northernmost regular marathon in the world. It has been taking place in June on the Norwegian island of Svalbard since 1995 .

Three distances are run: marathon, half marathon and 10 kilometers. The competitions are held on a 21 km long course around the main town on the island of Longyearbyen .

In June, the midnight sun shines on Svalbard and temperatures are a little above freezing point.

Traditionally, not only Norwegians run here , but athletes from all over the world.

In 2007, 22 men (including six Germans) and four women reached the goal.
