Bilingual street signs in Hong Kong

The official languages of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China are Cantonese , Mandarin (both are Chinese languages ) and English . They are used in administrations by the government. At the time when Hong Kong was a British overseas territory , administration was mainly in English, with the Chinese language Cantonese becoming an official language in 1974. After Hong Kong's sovereignty was transferred from Great Britain to the People's Republic of China in 1997, Cantonese and English remained the official languages of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Since Cantonese became an official language, most signs and government documents are in both languages.

Most of the ancestors of the people in Hong Kong come from mainland China , as well as from India , Nepal , Great Britain and the Philippines . Therefore many languages can be heard here.
