Sputnik (tool)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Sputnik is an unlocking tool for non-destructive unlocking. The tool contains a narrow key bit that fits into every cylinder lock. It also contains fine channels through which correspondingly thin wires are passed. Each of these wires is connected to a lever that allows each pin of the lock cylinder to be moved individually while the key bit is in the cylinder. There are usually five levers arranged in a circle, so the tool looks similar to the famous Russian spacecraft Sputnik .

Most cylinder locks can be opened non-destructively with the help of this tool within seconds. The tool can also be used to read the position of the pins and use the information to create a duplicate key.
