squidGuard is an Internet filter that can be used in conjunction with the Squid web cache proxy via the redirector mechanism. SquidGuard is free software and licensed under the GNU General Public License .

SquidGuard cannot be used against viruses or other malware . When a user surfs a website , Squid sends the page request to squidGuard for verification. If squidGuard finds the domain or the URL , the user is redirected to a page that tells him that he has no access to this page.

SquidGuard is configured via a central, text-based file. Here it is stored which destinations are blocked for whom and when and which page should be displayed instead of the blocked one. The information about the blocked domains and URLs is usually divided into different classes. In addition to the use of domain or URL lists, access can also be prevented with the help of regular expressions . The error rate here can be very high, i.e. more blocked than necessary. For example, if every URL that contains the word sex is blocked, pages about the state examination will not be displayed either. It is possible to store white lists whose entries can always be accessed.

The squidGuard administrator can design the access conditions very differently. Access can be allowed or denied depending on the user, time, source page and other criteria.

There are numerous plug-ins for squidGuard that add additional functions. With the help of a webmin plug-in, squidguard can be configured via a web interface.
