Water tower
The protruding tower head with iron framework

The former water tower of Hagenow is located on a hill just outside the city on Beckower Weg. The building, visible far in the landscape, forms a point of orientation and is a landmark of the Mecklenburg town of Hagenow .

Building

The 28 m high, round water tower was built as a brick building in the historicist style . The elaborate entrance portal as well as the ogival windows take on Gothic designs. The tower shaft tapers to the approach of the container area. The masonry surrounding the container protrudes clearly and is designed as a half-timbered construction with iron reinforcement. A wreath of ogival windows illuminates the interior. A slate roof closes the tower off at the top. It is conical at the top and widened like a hat brim at the bottom.

History

In the years 1905–1908 the water tower for the central urban water supply was built by AG Continental Wasserwerkgesellschaft Berlin. It contained a steel container with a capacity of 300 m³, the floor of which was 18 m above the site. In 1938 the building had to be reduced in height by order of the Luftwaffe. The tower fulfilled its function until the 1970s, but was then shut down and stood empty for a long time. Since the 1990s, it has been used for residential and business purposes after a corresponding renovation.

Hagenow's water supply today

The supply takes place today via the Hagenower Stadtwerke, which is based in the old waterworks in Bahnhofstrasse. In the Pätow water catchment (about 3 km southwest of Hagenow), groundwater is obtained from five supply wells. The water is also treated there and there are two intermediate storage tanks with a capacity of 500 m³ each for pure water . There are two more pure water tanks with a capacity of 900 m³ each in Bahnhofsstraße in Hagenow. Thanks to modern pumping systems, water towers are no longer necessary to protect against pressure. The municipal utility's drinking water supply network comprises 93 km of supply and transport lines and 27 km of house connection lines.
