St. Anthony's Church in Hoyel

The St. Antonius Church is the Evangelical Lutheran church in the village of Hoyel in the city of Melle . The church was enlarged in 1829 by a new building, in which only the tower and the north wall of the previous building remained.

history

Protestant services have been celebrated in the previous building since 1584. The rebuilding of the church became necessary when the Protestant parishes of Riemsloh (consisting of the towns of Krukum , Döhren and Westendorf) and Hoyel were united in 1814 . The masonry of the tower was increased from 14 to 17 meters in 1901. On May 11, 1900 it was decided to install a new tower clock, the Ed. Korfhage and sons in Buer at a price of 1,010 marks.

During the Second World War, the three largest of the four bells were melted down on June 1, 1942 . In 1948, three steel bells were purchased to replace them. The ringing of these bells had to be interrupted in 2008 due to severe rust damage. In 2009 three new bronze bells were purchased. The old steel bells are set up in front of the church as a reminder.

In 1994 the roof structure of the church, which was in danger of collapsing, was renewed and the interior of the church was renovated.

Architecture and equipment

The church is a single-nave hall building with a barrel vault.

The organ on the western gallery, built in 1880 by Gebr. Rohlfing from Osnabrück, has 17 registers and two manuals. In 2001 it was partially restored.

The classical altar designed and made by Bernhard Schagemann from Meppen from 1834 to 1839 was inaugurated on September 15, 1839.

The pulpit, the oldest object in the church, is dated 1584. It was already in the old church.

In the center of the church hangs a twelve-armed Flemish brass chandelier from 1733, the candles of which are lit during special services. It bears the dedication “H. Zacharias Ruysch zu Rimsloh, whose marriage was Fraw by then Antonia Vor-Wey, has venerated this crown of the church at Hoyel. AD MDCCXXXIII ".

Another brass chandelier designed and cast by silversmith Tümpel (originally from Bielefeld, then a teacher at the Hamburg School of Applied Arts) is in front of the altar. Farmer Heinrich Meyer zu Ohsen in Hoyel donated it to commemorate those who fell in World War II. The slogan on the lower ball of the 24-armed candlestick reads: "I believe that this time of suffering is not worth the glory that is to be revealed to us." The candlestick was given to the congregation on eternity Sunday in 1946 .

In the offering box, which is located in the upper part of the left altar barrier and is partly used for baptisms, a saying from Psalm 50 is carved under the opened cover: "Offer thanks to God and pay your vows to the Most High!"

Namesake

The church is named after St. Anthony ( Antonius the Great ), who lived in the third to fourth centuries AD.
