St. John Nepomuk Monument

The St. Johannes Nepomuk monument is a marble sculpture that was created around 1739 and stands in front of the Sterzing Town Hall in the new town.

The white marble statue depicts St. John Nepomuk , who is venerated as the patron saint against water hazards. It was erected in front of the town hall in 1739 so that the patron saint would spare the city from the devastating waters of the Vallerbach . This torrent has its source on the Rosskopf , Sterzing's local mountain, and before it was regulated it repeatedly plagued and muddyed Sterzing .

The Nepomuk statue in Sterzing is also a testimony to the Italianization of South Tyrol by the Italian fascists; In several places parts of the inscription were broken out and replaced by new stone fragments on which the Italian name of the city is written. These workings also damaged the statue itself: Cracks and fissures appeared in the aforementioned places that threaten to break parts of the statue.

On May 12, 1986, the St. Johannes Nepomuk monument was registered as an architectural monument of the city of Sterzing .
