The St. Lucius Church (also St. Luzius ) is in the Essen district of Werden and was a branch church of the Benedictine monastery in Werden .

history

The construction of the church can be traced back to the year 995 under Abbot Werinbert, the consecration by the Archbishop of Cologne Anno II took place in 1063. It was originally a simple hall structure , which received lower aisles around 1100, which were separated from the main nave by a Rhenish column change . The northern choir wall still shows the originally three-tier structure with a niche-like triforium. Significant remains of early Romanesque wall paintings have been preserved between the arch and the upper storey. The almost apsidal entrance hall, which was placed in front of the massive, fortress-like west tower, is remarkable. two small towers above the east yoke flank the chorus yoke.

As a result of the secularization in 1803, the building was used as a grain store from 1811 and later as living space, until the partition walls and fixtures that were drawn in were removed again from 1957. The restored church was rededicated in 1965.

In 1968 a relief by the sculptor Elmar Hillebrand was embedded in the front and back of the altar .

In 1985 the church, including the beamed ceiling, was painted in part based on color historical documents based on designs by the Hattingen artist Egon Stratmann . In the niches of the choir side walls there are still remains of historical, figurative paintings.

In 1991, following a generous donation, the building received a bronze portal designed by the artist Jürgen Goertz .

Today, mainly children's and school services are held in it.
