St. Mary Church

The Evangelical Reformed St. Maria Church is located in the East Frisian town of Hamswehrum , in the Krummhörn . The hall construction dates from 1968. Only the small bell tower from the previous church from the end of the 15th century has been preserved.

history

It is unknown when the first church in Hamswehrum was built. The church from the end of the 15th century probably had a previous building, which is indicated by the formulation noviter erecta . This church was built as a one-room church with a rectangular floor plan. On the church roof there was a ridge turret in the east.

The east wall of the church was divided by a stepped gable and a group of three staggered panels. There were ogival windows on the other walls. The church was entered through the attached, very low bell tower in the west, which has been preserved from the previous building. Inside there were buttresses set at an angle, but they never supported a vault.

Over the centuries the church deteriorated more and more. Its south wall sloped sharply outwards and the north wall inwards. In 1967 the building was demolished and replaced by a modern church the following year. Originally a gable wall was to be included in the new building, but then collapsed.

Architecture and equipment

The approximately geostete hall structure 1968 is covered by a gabled roof and in the eastern part of the long sides by rectangular windows with lattice structure and further to the west exposed by smaller windows in two planes. The east gable side is windowless; three ogival windows are reminiscent of the medieval predecessor building.

The organ built by Johann Friedrich Constabel for the Bargebur Church was in the Hamswehrum Church from 1864 to 1967, today it is in the Jennelter Church . The Dutch organ builder Johann Reil built a new small organ with six stops on one manual for the Hamswehrum church in 1969.
