Parish and pilgrimage church of St. Alban

The Catholic Parish and Pilgrimage Church of St. Alban (also St. Albanus) is a listed church building in Taubenbach , a district of the municipality of Reut in the Rottal-Inn district ( Bavaria ). The late Gothic church is considered to be the main work of Master von Taubenbach and is disproportionately large for the small town, it belongs to the still completely preserved late Gothic building ensemble of church, parish Albani chapel, fountain sanctuary and cemetery. The parish belongs to the dean's office Simbach in the diocese of Passau .

History and architecture

Old church

There is no description of the previous church, but it is certain that it was a solid stone building. It stood on the site of today's church, was about half as long and facing east, but shifted slightly to the south. Today's choir walls and towers were built on the foundations of the old church using the existing demolition material.

New Church

The construction of today's church began in the last third of the 15th century, an imposing building was created with a tower 72 meters high. The name of the builder has not been passed down, he was named after his main work as a master von Taubenbach. Its recurring stylistic features are unmistakable, on the west side of the choir the date of completion is 1473. A major renovation was carried out in 1989.

The interior appears spacious, with a heavy oak door serving as a portal. The ogival windows let sufficient light into the hall. The nave and choir are equipped with a round barrel vault. The round keystones look small. The vaults are supported by pillars that are stronger in the nave and weaker in the choir. At the back there is the west gallery with stairs, it is arched with three aisles and takes up the entire width of the wall. The formerly existing singing gallery was demolished in 1981 when a new organ was built.

Digs

During excavations in 1968, two graves with skeletons were found under the floor, one of which was probably a knight, the other a child. A priest was buried in the deeper layers of the earth, of whose equipment a mass gown and a belt were still recognizable. Two wells found were possibly the healing spring mentioned in the book of miracles and a baptismal font.

Furnishing

  • The magnificent high altar is a work by the brothers Martin and Michael Zürn.

The rectory

The late Gothic parsonage is the oldest in the Diocese of Passau, it has remained unchanged from the outside with its steep roof. The interiors have been adapted to contemporary needs, the heavy wooden beam ceiling in the living room and the floor plan have also been preserved.
