The Church of St. Albanus is the Roman Catholic parish church of the parish of Schillingen (Rhineland-Palatinate). The Romanesque tower dates from the 12th century and is one of the oldest surviving structures in the region.

The tower is offset by 32 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the church. In the basement of the tower about one meter below the level of the nave there is a chapel, the ceiling of which is formed by a groin vault.

The current classical nave dates from 1825. The old three-aisled church had been demolished except for the tower.

history

Tower of St. Albanus with the Memorial for Fallen

The first church with the early Gothic tower, which has now disappeared, was built in the 12th century. At that time the church had two aisles.

Large parts of the church burned down during the Thirty Years War. The restoration lasted until 1703. As early as 1720 the choir vault had to be renewed. After 1740 an aisle was added to the south to create more space for the faithful. The church had three aisles.

In 1825 today's single-nave nave was built.

The Gothic triumphal cross still comes from the old church, which today hangs on an iron chain above the main altar and the baptismal font under the epore (according to the inscription).

Equipment and windows

The windows in the choir area show Abraham ready to sacrifice Isaac, the Ascension of Christ and Christ as King. Two of the twelve windows of the nave show the patron Albanus and Maria. The other windows show ornaments.

The Way of the Cross and the crucifixion group - both in the Nazarene style - date from the 19th century. A baroque Madonna stands on the right side altar.

The altar, the ambo and the tabernacle were newly created in 2004 and consecrated by the then Bishop Reinhard Marx. In addition to an unknown relic, a relic of Blessed Sister Blandine Merten is set in the altar.

This Gerhard organ was built in 1959 in the parish church of St. Albanus in Schillingen instead of an instrument from the early 19th century. It has an unusual structure. In the upper manual there are two salizional registers. One stands on the wind chest on the gallery, the other hangs next to the altar as a remote work.
