The St. Andrew's Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral in Singapore , which was completed in 1861 and is named after the patron saint of Scotland. It is located in the center of the city, near the City Hall MRT station .

history

On November 9, 1835, the foundation stone for the previous building, St. Andrew's Church , was laid on the site of today's cathedral . Based on the plans of George D. Coleman, the church was built in the classical style. The completion took place in 1836, the first mass took place on June 18, 1837 and the consecration was carried out on September 10, 1838 by Daniel Wilson, the bishop from Calcutta responsible for Singapore . The name of the Scottish patron saint was chosen because the first donations came from the Scottish community.

In 1842, John Turnbull Thomson added a steeple to the church so that it could be clearly identified as such. The bell was donated in 1843 by Maria Revere, wife of the American consul Joseph Balestier (and daughter of Paul Revere ) - the words "Revere Boston 1843" were engraved on the bell and it was therefore also named Revere Bell . Since the tower did not have a lightning rod , it was struck by lightning in 1845 and 1849. Due to the damage to the church, it was classified as unsafe, closed in 1852 and ultimately demolished.

In 1855 the plans for a new church building were approved. The foundation stone was laid on March 4, 1856 and the church was built in the neo-Gothic style based on the plans of Ronald MacPherson. It is 68.58 m long, 35.5 m wide and at the time offered space for 300 people. The first mass was held on October 1, 1861, and the consecration was performed on January 25, 1862 by Bishop George Cotton.

After Singapore and the Straits Settlements were made a British Crown Colony in 1867, the Anglican Church in Singapore was placed under the responsibility of the Bishop of Labuan and Sarawak (and no longer Calcutta) in 1869 . In 1870 St. Andrew's was consecrated as the cathedral of the diocese - and after several restructuring it is also the current diocese, the Diocese of Singapore .

On June 28, 1973 the cathedral was named a National Monument .

Due to the congregation that has grown over the years, the cathedral was enlarged underground between May 2005 and November 2005. The Cathedral New Sanctuary extension can accommodate 800 people.
