St. Cosmas and Damian (Cologne hamlet)
St. Cosmas and Damian is the Roman Catholic parish church in Cologne-Weiler . In addition to this new parish church, Alt St. Cosmas and Damian has been preserved in the historic center of Weilers.
Alt St. Cosmas and Damian
The church of Weiler was incorporated as a gift from the brothers Regenbold and Wezelo under Archbishop Friedrich I. von Schwarzenburg to the Cologne Kunibertsstift . The Romanesque church building was replaced in 1766 by a simple baroque single-nave brick building with a western tower in front and a semicircular closed choir inside. The church remained with the Kunibertsstift until the secularization and the parish belonging to it was abolished during the French occupation and restored in 1824.
The new parish church
As the community grew, it became necessary to build a larger parish church, which was completed further south on Regenboldstrasse in neo-baroque style in 1925. The tower was completely modified and restored in the 1960s due to structural damage. The interior is vaulted by a shallow barrel, the side aisles have flat coffered ceilings. The church closes to the choir with a semicircular apse.
renovation
The church interior was renovated in 2006. In the course of the renovation, the "Sacred Heart Altar" was also restored, which is decorated with brass plates by the sculptor Hildegard Domizlaff . The brass plates were previously attached to the main altar.
The organ was also renovated and returned to its 1910 state. The organ, which was built by the Walcker organ building company , comes from a Protestant parish in Leuscheid . From there she came to Cologne in 1964, greatly changed. It was re-inaugurated on Easter Sunday 2007.
