history

As early as 1929, the parish of St. Remigius , at that time the only parish in Opladen, bought the property of today's St. Elisabeth Church and founded a church building association. However, it was not until 1945 that a parish rectorate was founded in the southeast of Opladen. Initially, the chapel of the former Aloysianum grammar school was used, which at that time served as the Opladen town hall. In 1955 the rectorate finally became the independent parish of St. Elisabeth.

The kindergarten was opened in 1952. In 1954 the construction of the youth home and the bell tower began, which was completed in 1956.

1956–1957 the actual church building was built according to plans by Emil Steffann , whose architectural principles clearly shape the design. The unusual architecture initially led to severe criticism from the population, which only slowly subsided in the following years. The entire church complex consists of exposed brickwork. A large paved courtyard is framed on three sides by the church building, rectory, sacristy, kindergarten, youth home, community office and the open bell tower. The fourth side is separated from the neighboring residential area by a wall.

The church building has essentially a square floor plan. At the top it is closed by a monopitch roof, which rises to the window side and is supported by two steel trusses visible from the inside. On one side of the building it is extended by a side chapel in which smaller services take place. Above, open to the church building through a generous arch, is the organ gallery with the organ, which was inaugurated in 1961. The interior of the church building also consists of exposed brickwork. The church is illuminated by a single window, over 16 m high, making it the largest wooden window in Europe.

In 1964 the construction of the parish library and the rectory began; In 1992 the window was colored glass according to a design by Paul Weigmann .

On January 1, 2010, the parishes of St. Three Kings , St. Elisabeth, St. Engelbert , St. Michael and St. Remigius dissolved and merged to form the new parish of St. Remigius Opladen.
