Parish Church of St. Georg

The Catholic parish church of St. Georg is a church building in Heisingen , a district of Essen .

History and architecture

The manual of the diocese of Essen says: The Heissi clearing was one of the first pieces of land that Liudger acquired on February 25, 796 in the lower Ruhr for the foundation of his monastery . A recently built chapel within the parish of St. Lucius in Werden was consecrated on April 22nd, 1493 in honor of St. George. After the abbey of Werden was abolished in 1802, pastoral care was initially continued by Werden. In 1813, the Bergisch Minister of the Interior in Düsseldorf appointed an Exconventual from Werden living in Heisingen as pastor.

The old single-nave chapel was expanded by two thirds in 1811. However, there was not enough space. After a neo-Gothic , three-nave hall church was built from 1879 to 1881 according to plans by the architect von der Stein , the previous church was demolished. The new building was made of Ruhr sandstone , it defines the townscape. The church was consecrated on October 23, 1881 by the Bishop of Fulda. In the course of a renovation in 1965 a new organ stage was installed and the side entrances were redesigned. From 1969 to 1970 the artist Heinrich Georg Bücker created a new interior, consisting of an altar and a tabernacle , made of the Ruhr area-related materials coal and steel. An image of the Virgin was recast .
