The Jakobskirche Pfalzgrafenweiler is the Protestant church in Pfalzgrafenweiler in the Black Forest . It was built in the neo-Romanesque style in 1907.

history

The first church in Pfalzgrafenweiler was built between 1469 and 1482. The Peter and Paul Church was an early Gothic local church and stood in the same place as today's Jakobskirche. With the church, the congregation also emancipated itself from the parent church in Altheim . In 1717 a rectory was built near the church. In 1772 the church was rebuilt and consecrated to St. James . A pilgrimage route to the tomb of the apostle in Santiago de Compostela , Spain leads through the Black Forest into the Alps . An access route to this main pilgrimage route ran near Pfalzgrafenweiler.

The year 1798 is known in Pfalzgrafenweiler for the devastating city fire . However, the Jakobskirche, the rectory and all other buildings on the hill, located on the slight rise of the Kirchenbuckel, were spared. The church became too small for the rapidly growing congregation by 1900 and was in poor condition. Therefore, the parish council of that time decided to build a new church. Only the lower part of the tower remained from the old St. James Church. Today's St. James' Church was consecrated on September 21, 1907.

building

Inside the church there is a large mural by the painter Rudolf Yelin the Elder . In 1907 he depicted the Transfiguration of Christ embedded in the landscape around Pfalzgrafenweiler. When the church was renovated in the 1960s, Professor Yelin, the artist's grandson, was the architectural advisor to the regional church . Presumably that is why the picture was preserved and did not fall victim to any current trend in church design.
