St. Johannes Baptista (Sankt Johann)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The pilgrimage church of St. Johannes Baptista was a pilgrimage church in the Upper Swabian town of Sankt Johann , a district of Kammlach . It was standing on the meadow south of house number 86. Excavations from 1959 brought the foundations of a late Gothic brick building to light. They had a total length of 27 meters, the west facade was 10 meters. The south side consisted of the three-axis choir with a three-quarter length. Buttresses were also found in the choir room. The vault ribs were made of clay.

The church already existed in 1167, when Abbot Isegrim gave the community a relic. Three very old altars were mentioned in 1679. During the secularization , the church was closed in 1803 and demolished in 1818. It is doubtful whether the building used as a private chapel, which was still there after 1818, consisted of the choir of the demolished church building. According to local residents, this chapel should not have been at house number 86, but at house 85. It is described in the parish chronicle as very old. It was renovated in 1901 and demolished as dilapidated in 1918. The bell in the roof turret is now on house number 86 1/2, which dates from the first half of the 19th century.
