The Church of St. Josef in Zabrze (German: Hindenburg OS ) is a Roman Catholic church in modern style. The expressionist building with brick facade was built from 1930 to 1931 according to the plans of the German architect and church builder Dominikus Böhm (1880–1955). It is located in the western part of the city center south at ul.Roosevelta 104.

history

Construction of the church began on August 4, 1930 with the groundbreaking ceremony. The foundation stone was laid on August 31, 1930. In 1931 the parish of St. Josef was founded, which took over part of the tasks of the Andreas parish in Hindenburg, and the Josefskirche was completed in December 1931. On September 4, 1932, the church was solemnly consecrated by Cardinal Adolf Bertram (1859–1945) from Breslau.

architecture

The entrance of the church with its two arches and twelve other round arches is supposed to represent the heavenly gate "Porta Sacra". On the east side of the church, the church tower was built, which has 40 arched windows. The 40 windows symbolize the 40-year desert migration of the Israelites to Canaan .

The interior of the church is 67.5 meters long and 26 meters wide. The presbytery with the altar is raised by two meters. Below is a chamber with ten arcade windows and a miner's chapel. In it is an altar of St. Barbara, which was created from coal by miners in the 1930s.

The windows of the sacred building are decorated with different stained glass. One shows three scenes from the Holy Scriptures and is dedicated to the theme of the Eucharist, another shows the Holy Family and a round window at the entrance is designed as a rose window.
