history

The St. Maria Junggesellenbruderschaft Neuwerk-Kloster eV was founded in the 1750s by members of the oldest Neuwerker brotherhood, the St. Barbara Brotherhood Neuwerk eV from 1497. The date of foundation can no longer be determined exactly, the oldest still preserved statute dates from 1755. This first statute regulated the duties of kings and brotherhood members. The fraternity received the first flag, which is no longer preserved, in 1756. Thus, the statute was expanded to include the office of ensign. Since the founding of the brotherhood, the bird's shot to determine the new king and the early fair (pageantry) have taken place almost every year. In 1903 the brotherhood received the oldest remaining flag to date. During the two world wars the brotherhood of all brotherhoods rested in Neuwerk. During this time, many of the Brotherhood's possessions were lost. However, some members were able to save the flag and royal silver beyond the wars. So all brotherhoods in Neuwerk could be rebuilt, which was followed with great interest. The first celebrations after the war took place in 1949. A joint parade has been held by all four Neuwerker brotherhoods since 1956 . In 1969 fraternity life had to cease due to financial problems and disputes within the fraternity. In the following year, however, some members were found who made it their task to lead the brotherhood back to its old strength. In 2005 the 250th anniversary of the brotherhood was celebrated in Neuwerk.

The brotherhood today

The brotherhood currently consists of about 70 members and is therefore the smallest brotherhood in Neuwerk. Many traditions are maintained to this day. For example, the celebration of an early and late fair, as well as the Schützenbaum festival. Every year the brotherhood organizes the largest Halloween party in the Mönchengladbach area in the Krahnendonkhalle Neuwerk. To this day, not a year has passed without a king from the ranks of the Brotherhood.
