St. Martin (Martinsthal)
The St. Martin Church, consecrated in 1964, is the former Roman Catholic parish church of Martinsthal , a district of Eltville .
history
When the Roman Catholic community grew along with Martinsthal, a new church was built by 1964. The building was built on Kirchstrasse, opposite the Gothic church of St. Sebastian and Laurentius . The Gothic building was profaned in 2004 and has been used for cultural purposes ever since. With the austerity imposed by the diocese, the decision was made to use the historic church liturgically again. In 2017, St. Sebastian and Laurentius were consecrated again and have since served as a Roman Catholic place of worship again. As it became known in 2020, the meanwhile profane modern church of St. Martin is to be converted for residential purposes.
architecture
St. Martin was built according to plans by the Wiesbaden architect Paul Johannbroer (1916–1985). To the outside, the church shows itself as a natural stone-view gable roof with an indented tower. The interior is divided into two floors: the community room below, the transverse church service room above. The upper floor receives light primarily from light slots in the roof area. In addition, the back of the church shows a figural concrete glass design by the artist Johannes Beeck .
