St. Martinus was the Roman Catholic parish church in the Vlissingen district of West Souburg in the Dutch province of Zeeland .

history

Before 1050, the increase in population in southern Walcheren made it necessary to build a new parish church in West Souburg. The parish took place from the Westmünster to Middelburg . The new church was later collegiate and even mother new daughter parishes, namely, from Oost-Souburg , Oud-Vlissingen and Ritthem in 1235, Nieuwwerve around 1300 and Nieuw-Vlissingen by 1308. During the Eighty Years' War , the church was during the siege of Middelburg 1572 to In 1574 it was so badly damaged that it was decided to put down the Gothic hall longhouse. Only the choir was restored as a space for the Reformed worship. In 1833 the choir was also resigned and from now on services were only celebrated in the church in Oost-Souburg.

The tradition of this old parish church in West Souburg was taken up again by the Roman Catholic Church, which was again allowed to celebrate services in Vlissingen from 1757, after the decision to build a new parish church in West Souburg after the growth of the community in the Vlissingen area, which took up the patronage of St. Martin of Tours . The church was built in 1938 and was badly damaged a short time later during the Second World War. The building was restored and in 1966 the choir was enlarged. At the beginning of the 1990s, the Catholic Church could no longer hold the sacred building. The church was abandoned and is now used as an Advent church by Seventh-day Adventists .
