St. Mary's Priory ( Irish Mainistir Mhuire ) is a former priory of the Carmelites in Loughrea in Ireland ( County Galway ). Today there is a modern branch of the Discalced Carmelites in the immediate vicinity .

history

The Carmelite priory was founded around 1300 by the Norman Richard de Burgh (1259–1326). The ruins of the priory church consist of a single nave, a southern transept and a long choir, each with five lancet windows arranged in pairs to the south and a tracery window from around 1500 at the end of the choir. The crossing tower was also added around 1500. In the course of the Reformation the priory came into the possession of Richard, Earl of Clanricarde. Initially, the Carmelite Brothers were not completely expelled, but were initially able to settle in the neighborhood. From 1640 Discalced Carmelites worked in Loughrea, which were finally able to build a new priory in 1829.
