St. Matthew in Niederkassel

St. Matthäus is the Roman Catholic parish church of Niederkassel ( Rhein-Sieg-Kreis ) in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The massive five-story, barely articulated west tower, which was built around 1200, still bears witness to the Romanesque parish church of Niederkassels. The church was mentioned in a document when Theodorich von Heinsberg and Blankenberg gave the patronage to the Cologne Teutonic Order . In the 14th century the Graf von Berg was the patron saint, from the 16th century it was alternately with local noble families. The Romanesque nave, to which a Gothic choir was added later, was extended in 1719 by a side aisle. In 1893 the church was laid down except for the tower and rebuilt in neo-Romanesque form as a three-aisled basilica with transept according to plans by the architect Gerhard Franz Langenberg .
