Chapel of St. Matthew

The St. Matthew chapel in the Hüttenberg district of Ofterschwang is a building from the 18th century.

History and description

The transverse base stone of the chapel bears the inscription “17 W 06”; The construction of the chapel - which was a long time ago - is mentioned in a document from 1783. The altar was consecrated on September 21, 1829 by the dean Josef Kirchhofer; at that time the permit was also granted. One of the most valuable pieces of equipment in the building is a statue of Mary from the mid-14th century. The crowned Mary holds the standing Jesus child who holds out an orb to her. The rococo altar is dominated by a dungeon Christ behind a wooden lattice in a round arched niche . It is also adorned with figures of St. Peter and St. Ottilie. The depiction of a resurrection Christ dates from around 1630. The portrait of the chapel patron Matthew was made around 1700.

The ringing consists of two bells, the older of which dates from 1716. The younger was cast by Theodor Wolfart in 1903 . From 1977 the chapel was renovated. At that time the entrance was moved from the street to the south side, so that a new, covered entrance and an extension of the sacristy could be set up there. The interior of the chapel was decorated with stucco and a ceiling painting, wooden floors and benches were renewed.

A cross stone from the 17th century with the portraits of Maria and Johannes, who originally stood on the way to Bettenried , was built into the north wall in the interior of the chapel. A cross with the year 1777 on the transom was placed in the covered entrance area.
